La UE está
observando cuidadosamente las actividades GM en el Reino Unido ante la posible necesidad
de regular las importaciones de alimentos de ese país.
Un artículo recientemente publicado por el boletín
informativo organic-market.info’s newsletter (1) se hace eco de los
primeros temblores en agricultura por la aprobación de experimentos con
cultivos transgénicos en el Reino Unido (UK), los que progresarían ante la
eventual separación de la ese país luego del Brexit con la UE. Las autoridades
de la UE temen la posibilidad del cambio de posición de la UK respecto de los
cultivos GM que la alinearían más con la posición de los EEUU.
El artículo mencionado dice: “Recientemente
el gobierno de la UK dio la aprobación de realizar experimentos con cultivos de
trigo genéticamente modificado. La siembra tendrá lugar esta primavera boreal
(ver we reported earlier). Las papas vendrían a ser el
siguiente cultivo.
“La newsletter de la Soil Association citó
un informe del diario The Times (Feb
17) el que expresa que el Parlamento Europeo está preocupado temiendo que los
estándares alimenticios de la UK se relajarían a los mismos niveles de los
EEUU. Y, más aún, informa que “si la UK quiere mantener el comercio en
alimentos con la UE tendrá que considerar sus prácticas agrícolas, aquello que
importa y de dónde lo hace’.

informa que “Las plantas transgénicas recientemente
modificadas para llevar un gen de una avena silvestre (stiff brome) encuentran
la oposición de organizaciones críticas de la técnica GM. El ministro de Agricultura
George Eustice indicó que el gobierno estará
abierto a re-examinar la posición sobre el uso de cultivos GM después de que la
UK abandone la UE”.

FIRST GM EFFECTS OF
BREXIT
The EU is watching the GM developments happening in the UK with the possible
need to regulate food imports from that country.
In a recent article
published by Organic-Market.info’s
newsletter (1) the first tremors in agriculture after the Brexit are originated by the approval by the UK of experiments with GM crops, that will occur following
the separation of the UK from the EU. The EU authorities are foreseeing the
possibility of changing their relationship with the UK in case this country
modifies its attitude towards genetic engineering, that will place them more in
line with that of the US.
The aforementioned article says “Recently the UK government gave the final go-ahead for a new
experimental crop of genetically modified (GM) wheat. The planting will take
place this spring (we reported earlier). Potatoes should follow.
“Soil Association
newsletter quoted a report by The
Times (Feb 17) that says that the EU Parliament is concerned that
UK food standards will be relaxed to US levels. And further, it is reported, ‘if
the UK wants to maintain food trade with the EU, it will have to think about
farming practices, what it imports, and from where’.
The Organic-Market.info
reports that “The newly
developed GM wheat plants that have been modified to carry a gene from a wild
relative called stiff brome meet the concern of GM critical organizations.
Farming minister George Eustice indicated that the government was open to re-examining
the position on using GM crops after the UK leaves the EU”.
