CAMBIO CLIMÁTICO: CIENCIA Y ÉTICA

CIENCIA FALAZ DETRÁS DEL CAMBIO CLIMÁTICO      (ENGLISH VERSION BELOW)

No es la primera vez que las negativas acerca de la realidad del cambio climático son apoyadas por ciencia sospechosa. Pero ahora un artículo (1) puntualiza el caso de un prominente científico cuyos numerosos trabajos de investigación cuestionando las causas del cambio climático fueron financiados por la industria de los combustibles fósiles.

Mucha gente ha sospechado desde hace tiempo que los científicos que rechazan la realidad del cambio climático lo hacen poniendo  su ciencia en beneficio de grupos interesados. Pero ahora hay pruebas de ello.

Willie Soon, un prominente científico del Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, ha estado publicando sus investigaciones académicas durante años financiadas por Exxon Mobil, American Petroleum Institute,  Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation, Donors Trust y la empresa de servicios, Southern Company – más de US$ $800,000 desde el 2008, y más de 1.2 millones en los últimos 10 años.

Este señor publicó 11 estudios en nueve publicaciones profesionales como el  Journal of Climate, pero no mencionó que sus compensaciones provinieron de la industria de los combustibles fósiles, infringiendo así protocolos sobre conflictos de intereses.

La firme opinión de Soon es que las tormentas solares son las que estan calentando a la Tierra. El Sr. Soon es el científico preferido de quienes niegan el cambio climático como el Senador James Inhofe (Republicano por Okahoma), que ahora preside el Comité Senatorial para el Ambiente. Cuando los Republicanos necesitan a alguien para declarar contra la ciencia del cambio climático éste señor es el elegido, quién ganó un premio al coraje del  Heartland Institute por enfrentar al vasto número de científicos que estan en desacuerdo con él. Sus testimonios fueron usados para bloquerar las acciones contra el cambio climático y los incentivos hacia las energías renovables.

Comentario del Editor: Es bien conocido que las universidades conducen sus proyectos de investigación financiados por donantes que son, de una forma u otra, partes interesadas. Esto no significa que los resultados resultan alguna vez – o aún muy raramente – “comprados” por individuos o grupos que quieren desviar los resultados de conclusiones científicamente sólidas. Pero cuando los fondos escasean no resulta imposible concebir que los investigadores se vean tentados a interpretar sus resultados “ligeramente” a favor de los intereses de los donantes. Es cierto que hay protocolos sobre conflictos de intereses que deberían alejar a los científicos serios de beneficios aunque solo sean ligeramente sospechosos. Pero esos protocolos no siempre evitan las acciones distorsionadas como trata de demostrar el artículo precedente. (Después de todo, solo somos humanos, ¿no?…)

DECEITFUL SCIENCE BEHIND CLIMATE CHANGE DENIAL

Not the first time that climate change denials are supported by suspiscious science. But now an article (1) discloses a specific case of a prominent scientist whose numerous research works questioning climate change have been funded by the fossil fuel industry.

Many people have long suspected that scientists who refute the evidence are paid off and now there's proof.

Willie Soon, a prominent scientist at Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, has published "scholarly" research for years with funding from Exxon Mobil, American Petroleum Institute,  Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation, Donors Trust and the utility, Southern Company - over $800,000 since 2008, and over 1.2 million in the past 10 years.

He published 11 studies in nine professional publications like Journal of Climate, and didn't mention his compensation came from the fossil fuel industry - breaching conflict of interest protocols.

Soon's big argument is that solar flares are causing the Earth to warm. He's the go-to "scientist" for deniers like Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), who now chairs the Senate Environment Committee. When Republicans need someone to testify against the science of climate change, he's their man - he won a "courage" award from Heartland Institute for standing up to the vast number of scientists that disagree with him. His testimonies have been used to block action on climate change and incentives for renewable energy. 

Editor’s comment: It is well known that universities conduct their prolific research work  funded by donors which are in one way or another stakeholders. This doesn’t mean that research results are always – or even occationally - bought off by parties or groups that want  to sway conclusionjs away fom scientifically sound conclussions.  But when funds are scarce it is not imposible to conceive that researchers may be tempted to interpret  test results towards the donors’ interests. There are conflict of interest protocols that should shun serious scientists away from even suspiscious payoffs. But they not always prevent suspiscious torted actions, as it is probably the case dealt with in the above article. After all, we are just humans…
