[QUITO]  Un estudio acusa a los países desarrollados que encabezan la lista de naciones que han pirateado los recursos genéticos de Ecuador.

El estudio ⁽¹⁾  lista a los EEUU, Alemania, Holanda, Australia y Corea del Sur como los cinco países que solicitaron el mayor número de patentes de productos derivados delos recursos endémicos de Ecuador.  

Los así llamados “biopiratas” son los responsables de 113 de las 128 solicitudes de patentes identificadas en el studio. Los mismos no requirieron la autorización de Ecuador para accede a los recursos genéticos usados en esas patentes, dijo el 23 de junio ppdo. René Ramírez, jefe del departamento de educación superior, ciencia, tecnología e innovación en la presentación del informe llevada a cabo en esta ciudad.

“Es esencial que todos los países adhieran y ratifiquen la Convención sobre Diversidad Biológica y el Protocolo de Nagoya”, dice Luis Coloma, del Jambatu Amphibian Research Center ⁽²⁾.

El patentamiento de productos basados en los reursos endémicos de Ecuador sin el permiso del estado es “abusive, ilegítima e ilegal”, dice el informe.

[QUITO]  Developed countries top the list of nations that have pirated Ecuador’s genetic resources, a report has found.

The study ⁽¹⁾  lists the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia and South Korea as the five countries that requested most patents for products derived from Ecuador’s endemic resources.

So-called “biopirates” in these countries are responsible for 113 of the 128 applications or patents identified in the report. They did not request authorisation from Ecuador to access the genetic resources used in these patents, said René Ramírez, chief of the department of higher education, science, technology and innovation, at a presentation of the report here on 23 June.

“It is essential that all countries join and ratify the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Nagoya Protocol”, says Luis Coloma, Jambatu Amphibian Research Center ⁽²⁾.

Patenting products based on Ecuador’s endemic resources without the state’s permission is “abusive, illegitimate and illegal”, the report states.
