ESTRATEGIA PARA LA RECUPERACIÓN DE POLINIZADORES
EEUU: OTRO DEVASTADOR AÑO PARA ABEJAS; LA CASA BLANCA DISEÑA UNA

Justo a
tiempo para otro año de pérdidas devastadoras de abejas, la Casa Blanca emitió
su plan nacional estratégico de polinizadores para recomponer las poblaciones
de abejas, mariposas y otros polinizadores.
En
el año pasado murieron un 42% de
colonias según estableció la encuesta anual de apicultores conducida por el
Bee Informed Partnership, Inspectores Apícolas de América, y el USDA, marcando
un aumento del 34,2% respecto del año anterior.
El Presidente Obama instruyó al USDA y al Administrador de la
EPA de conducir el Equipo de Trabajo sobre Salud de Polinizadores que
desarrollará una estrategia para la
investigación y el recupero de poblaciones de polinizadores. También
instruyó a las agencias de Expandir sustancialmente las áreas de habitat de polinizadores
en tierras federales. Hoy se publicó la National
Pollinator Health Strategy (Estrategia Nacional
de Salud de Polinizadores), que incluye, entre otras cosas, la reconstitución en
los próximos 5 años de 7 millones de acres (3,5 millones de has.) de tierras de
habitat de polinizadores, y la protección de las mariposas
Monarch y otros polinizadores.
Lo que resulta incomprensible es que en el último año la EPA
(Agencia de Protección Ambiental de los EEUU) haya aprobado dos nuevos pesticidas neónicos, expandiendo
su uso a más cultivos permitiendo mayores cantidades posibles de aplicar a los
mismos. Y después anunció que no se permitirán nuevos usos hasta que esas
aprobaciones sean revisadas completamente, lo que podría llevar hasta dos años
más.
Los
apicultores harán presión para asegurar que la EPA cumpla con el Acta de Especies en Peligro a fin de prevenir
la muerte de las especies en mayor riesgo, requerirá de todas las agencias la
garantía de que las tierras federales y cualquier otro hábitat de polinizadores
se encuentren libres de insecticidas
sistémicos, e que intensifique las investigaciones sobre alternativas verdes para los pestIcidas.

ANOTHER DEVASTATING YEAR FOR BEES, WHITE HOUSE RELEASES STRATEGY (SustainableBusiness.com News, May 19, 2015)
Just in
time for another year of devastating honey bee losses, the White House released
its national pollinator strategy to restore populations of bees,
butterflies and other pollinators.
Over
the past year, 42% of honey bee colonies died according to the annual
beekeeper survey conducted by Bee Informed Partnership, Apiary
Inspectors of America and the US Department of Agriculture. That's up from
34.2% the previous year.
President Obama directed the Secretary of
Agriculture (USDA) and EPA Administrator to co-chair a Pollinator
Health Task Force that would develop a strategy for research and recovery
of pollinator populations. He also directed federal agencies
to substantially expand pollinator habitat on federal lands. Today,
they released the National
Pollinator Health Strategy, which
includes, among other things, restoring 7 million acres of
land for pollinator habitat over the next 5 years, as well as protecting
Monarch buterflies, bats and other
pollinators.
Unbelievably, over the past
year, EPA approved two new neonics, expanded their use to
more crops, as well as the amounts that can be applied to crops. Then
it announced there would be no new uses until its review is completely, which
could take as long as two more years.
Beekeepers will press to ensure EPA
compliance with the Endangered Species Act to prevent killing most imperiled
species, require agencies to ensure that all federal lands and any new
pollinator habitats are free of systemic insecticides and iIncrease research
on green alternatives of pesticides
