DECLARACIÓN AMBIENTAL DE PRODUCTO (EPD)

SUSTENTABILIDAD EN LA PRODUCCIÓN AGRÍCOLA

Los cambios climáticos y sus causas despiertan el interés de los consumidores orientándolos a buscar información sobre la sustentabilidad de los productos que consumen. Una herramienta de evaluación de la sustentabilidad incluye el siguiente sistema de certificación de origen y ambiental de tercera parte.  (ENGLISH VERSION BELOW)

LA CERTIFICACIÓN EPD EN APOYO DE LA DOCUMENTACIÓN AMBIENTAL (de un artículo por Giuseppe Garcea, Scheme Manager EPD, http://www.ccpb.it/blog/category/news/, boletín Abril 2014)

La sustentabilidad es uno de los objetivos prioritarios de la nueva Política Agrícola Comunitaria (PAC), así como de los próximos Programas Comunitarios (Horizon 2020)  y de mercados de consumidores cada vez más sensibles a las informaciones ambientales y de la forma en la que ellas son comunicadas.

Por lo tanto se torna cada vez más importante para los actores de la cadena agroindustrial estar capacitados para ofrecer  al mercado información relevante sobre las prestaciones ambientales de sus productos y servicios. Esas informaciones deben estar basadas en datos científicos verificables y comparables, de forma tal que todas las partes interesadas puedan evaluar y adoptar sus propias decisiones de compra.

La EPD (Environmental Product Declaration – Declaración Ambiental de Producto) es un esquema  de certificación internacional voluntaria desarrollado por el Swedish Environmental Management Council. (Concejo de Control Ambiental de Suecia). Nace con el objetivo de ofrecer información de tipo ambiental certificada por un Ente de Tercera Parte, que es ya reconocido  como instrumento innovador capaz de evaluar todas las características, prestaciones ambientales de producto y servicios y publicarlo como una Declaración Ambiental.

La susodicha Declaración Ambiental de Producto está basada en el análisis del ciclo de vida del producto (ISO 14040) y se desarrolla mediante la aplicación de la norma ISO 14025 (Etiqueta Ambiental del tipo III), siendo aplicable a todos los productos o servicios independientemente de su uso o posición en la cadena productiva.

La certificación EPD satisface la exigencia de verificar un perfil ambiental internacionalmente reconocido del producto; establecer el objetivo de mejoramiento en materia de eficiencia ambiental y económica y comunicar con transparencia al mercado el cumplimiento de los objetivos mencionados y en una óptica de B-2-B (Business-to-Business) y B-2-C (Business-to-Consumer).

SUSTENTABILITY IN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION

The climate changes and their causes awake the interest of consumers to seek information about the sustainability of the products they consume. A tool for the evaluation of sustainability  includes a third party certification of the origine and environmental characteristics of the products.

Sustainability is one of the prioritary objectives of the new Communitary Agricultural Policy (CAP) and also of the next Communitary Programes (Horizon 2020), orienting consummer markets always more sensitive to environmental informations and the form in which these are communicated.

Therefore, it becomes more and more  important for the actors of the agro-industrial chain to be ready to offer relevant information to the market about the environmental characteristics of their products and services. Such information must be based on verifiable and comparable scientific data, in such a way that all stakeholders can evaluate and make their own purchasing decisions.

EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a voluntary international certification scheme developped by the Swedish Environmental Management Council. It was created with the objective of offering environmental information certified by a Third Party scheme; it is already known as an innovative tool capable of evaluating the product’s and services’ environmental characteristics, reporting them in the form of an Environmental Declaration.

Said Environmental Product Declaration is based on the life cycle of the product (ISO 14040) and is developed through the application of the ISO 14025 standard  (Environmental Label type III). It is applicable to any product  or service independantly of its use or position in the productive chain.

The EPD certification satisfies the requirement of defining  an internationally accepted  environmental profile,  establishing the improvement  in environmental and economic  efficiency, and to communicate with trqansparency to the market the fulfillment of the cited objectives from a BtoB and BtoC standpoint.
