CONTRA PATENTAMIENTO DE LA VIDA
PATENTES DE SEMILLAS Y ORGANISMOS VIVOS
El patentamiento de la vida es una actividad completamente indeseable. Aparte de las consecuencias materiales de este procedimiento es muy reprobable que el hombre impida la recolección y reproducción de elementos vivos. El tema abarca aspectos éticos y morales que afectan una actividad tan ancestral como la acción del agricultor en la Naturaleza y en la alimentación humana.
El newsletter de la asociación Naturland, de gran predicamento en la agricultura orgánica alemana y mundial, publica en su edición de Diciembre de 2014, una noticia acerca de la reacción de los agricultores de ese país contra el patentamiento de la vida. (1)
Ninguna patente sobre la vida: el
27 de octubre, una amplia coalición de asociaciones y organizaciones no
gubernamentales participaron en una manifestación frente a la Oficina Europea
de Patentes en Munich para protestar por la concesión de patentes sobre plantas
y animales.
En el corazón de la manifestación
se encontraban varios representantes de Naturland. La manifestación fue motivada
por una audiencia pública sobre las patentes de ciertas razas de brócoli y
tomates que se estaba celebrando en ese mismo momento en la oficina de
patentes. El tema en discusión era la cuestión fundamental de si las plantas cultivadas
de manera convencional (es decir, no por ingeniería genética) pueden ser
patentadas debido a unas ciertas características o no.
Se proporcionó información sobre los riesgos ecológicos y
sociales inherentes a las patentes de semillas: habría un aumento de los monopolios
que dominan el cultivo convencional, de la misma manera como ya es evidente en
la ámbito de las distintas clases de OMGs (organismos modificados
genéticamente). Los pequeños productores serían desplazados del mercado,
disminuiría la variedad de las semillas cultivadas y nuestra soberanía
alimentaria estaría, por tanto, amenazada. "No a las Patentes sobre
Semillas", la coalición que organizó la manifestación, está por tanto, exigiendo
la prohibición general de todas las patentes sobre las plantas y los animales.

PATENTS ON SEEDS AND LIVE ORGANISMS
Patenting live organisms is a highly undesirable activity. Besides its material consequences the right of humans to prevent the reproduction and collection of live organisms is quite questionable. Several aspects of moral and ethical concern affect the ancestral agricultural activity of the human beings in relation with Nature and human food.
The newsletter of Naturland, an association of great predicament within German farmers published a news in its December 2014 issue in relation with the reaction of farmers against patenting live organisms (1).
No patents on life: Oct. 27 a wide
coalition of associations and NGOs participated in a demonstration in front of
the European Patents Office in München, protesting patents on plants and animals.
In the demonstration several members
of Naturland were present. The demonstration was motivated by a public audience
on the patenting of several varieties of Broccoli and tomatoes in course at that
very momenbt in the patents office. The subject was the fundamental question of
whether the conventional plants (that is no-GMOs) could be patented due to
ceretain charateristics.
Information on the ecological and
social risk inherent to seed patents was given: an increase of monopolies that
dominate conventional crops, in the same way that is already evident in the
area of several clases of GMOs. Small farmers will be pushed out of the market,
the number of cultivated seeds will diminish, and food sovereignity would be
threatened. . “No to Seed Patents” is the coalition that organized the demonstration, and is
demanding general prohibition of patenting plants and animals.
