The American  Pioneer Group, branch of the DuPont giant, is about to launch in the US and in the EU a ‘healthy’ GM soybean  under the Plenish brand, reports Le Monde. Its rival Monsanto, also developed a similar product, Vistive Gold. The objective is to modify the public most  feared image of the GM industry.

The new soybean oil is enriched with oleic acids that make them close to olive oils, and free from ‘bad’  fats..

“The European Food Safety Authorities – EFSA- will soon give their opinion about this product, explains Michael Keller, speaker of
DuPont  Pioneer, and a decision is expected for mid 2014”.  On the other hand , crops of Vistive Gold have been approved in the US, Canada and Mexico. Authorization for exports to China and the EU is also expected.

Up to now all GM crops introduced in the US and Europe are for fighting pests and weeds. “Presenting GMs as products that interest consumers, eventually supported by explanations in the label, they will influence the population range that is hostile to transgenics”, says  Christophe Noisette, of the
 Inf'OGM association.

But these substances still present some concerns, confirms Laurent Chevallier, Montpellier CHU’s nutrition physician. Above all, there is a risk of wanting to patent all sorts of live things and many others that we do not need, since there are many fats with nutrition virtues and few trans fatty acids.
