SALMÓN ATLANTICO: SU SUPERVIVENCIA?
CANADA APRUEBA PRODUCCIÓN EN
GRAN ESCALA DE HUEVAS DE SALMÓIN GM (de

La decisión Canadiense facilita la producción del
primer animal OGM que lo acerca a la alimentación y a los supermercados. Environment
Canada declaró haber otorgado a la sociedad biotecnológica Estadounidense AquaBounty
Technologies, Inc. el permiso de exportar cada año 100.000 huevas de pez
transgénico de un criadero en la Isla Príncipe Eduardo a una selva pluvial
panameña antes de una eventual aprobación en los EEUU.
La FDA (Food
and Drug Administration de los EEUU) anunciaría en un futuro próximo la
decisión de aprobar la venta de salmón GM y, a su debido tiempo, otras 30
especies de peces transgénicos actualmente en fase de experimentación.
El gobierno
Canadiense explicó en su decisión que los peces OGM presentan un riesgo elevado
para el salmón atlántico en caso de fuga. Pero una declaración del sector
insiste en que no habrá ni venta ni consumo inmediato de huevas de salmón
transgénico en Canadá.
“Están
en vigor rígidas reglas que impiden la difusión de este pez en la cadena
alimentaria”, recordó en un e-mail el portavoz del Environment Canada. “En
Canada, ningún pez transgénico ni sus huevas han recibido hoy vía libre parta
destinarlos a consumo humano”.
Pero
la limitada aprobación representa, sin embargo, una resonante victoria de la AquaBounty
que, de veinte años a esta parte lucha para llevar el salmón OGM a la mesa de
los Norteamericanos.

CANADA APROVES
PRODUCTION IN LARGE SCALE OF EGGS OF GM SALMON. (from an article published

The Canadian decision facilitates
production of the first transgenic animal, bringing it closer to conumers and
supermarkets. Environment Canada declares that they gave the biotechnological
US company AuqaBounty Technologies. Inc. permision to export 100,000 eggs of
trangenic fish each year from a production plce in Prince Eduard Island to a
Panamenian rain forest, previous to the eventual approval in the US.
The FDA (US Food and Drug
Administration) would announce in the near future the decision to aprove the
sales of the GM salmon, as well as other 30 GM fish species presently under research.
In their decisión the Canadian Government explained that the GM fish
represent a serious
risk for the
atlantic salmon in case of escapes. But in the sector’s declaration they insist
that
there will be no
immediate sale or consumption of the GM salmon in Canada.
“Strict regulations
are in force that would not allow the difusion of this fish in the food chain”,
said a speaker of Environment Canada. “In Canada, no transgenic fish or their
eggs have received up to now free way to destine them to human consumption”.
Nevertheless, the
limited aproval repersent a resounding success for AquaBounty that during
twenty years have beeen fighting to put he GM salmon in the Northamerican
tables.
