Se trata de una planta piloto, una instalación en la que ocho plataformas flotantes de apenas un metro cuadrado se han instalado en un espigón donde baten las olas.

Las olas del mar serán a partir de hoy una de las fuentes suministradoras de energía eléctrica de Gibraltar, colonia que ha apostado por este nuevo método debido a sus limitaciones de espacio para albergar otro tipo de instalaciones, como las solares o las eólicas.
El sistema recoge la fuerza de las olas y la transforma en energía que se distribuye por la red eléctrica. Esta primera instalación, ubicada en el lado de levante de El Peñón, generará 0,5 megavatios.
El gobierno ha hecho una “inversión muy pequeña, sólo echar el cable hasta la orilla del mar” porque ha sido la empresa la que se ha hecho cargo del resto a cambio de que luego se le compre la energía que se produce, ha explicado.
