“No son casos aislados, en todas partes cuecen habas”, ha afirmado Joan Martínez Alier, es el coordinador del Atlas de Justicia Ambiental, un proyecto que nació en la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona con el que se pretende visualizar los diferentes conflictos sociales desarrollados en torno al medio ambiente en todo el mundo.

Es un  “work in progress”, según ha señalado Alier, en el que se han recopilado hasta ahora 1.729 conflictos repartidos por todo el mundo y que en los próximos cinco años esperan que reúna hasta 3.000 casos gracias a una subvención de 2 millones de euros del Consejo de Investigación Europeo.

Extracción de minerales, de gas, de petróleo. Pero también en relación con el transporte, el derecho al territorio, las plantaciones de soja, la gestión de los residuos o las fumigaciones con glifosato.

El atlas permite, por el momento, búsquedas de conflictos por países, por la mercancía o tema objeto del conflicto –el derecho al territorio es el tema con más conflictos relacionados por todo el mundo, con 495 casos mostrados en este mapa, seguido por el agua, con 300 casos–, o por empresas –Shell, Nigerian Petroleum Corporation y Chevronson las que aparecen con más conflictos relacionados–.

“They are not isolated cases; they happen everywhere”, said Joan Martínez Alier, coordinator of the Environmental Justice Atlas, a Project born in the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona trying to visualize the different social conflicts developed around the environment all over the world.

It is a  “work in progress”, pointed out Alier, in which up to now 1,729 cases have been individualized all over the world. Some 3,000 cases are expected in the next five years by this work performed thanks to a subsidy of 2 million euros by the European Research Council.  

Extraction of minerals, gas, oil but also transportation, the rights to the territory, soybean plantations, refuse management or glyphosate spraying.

In the atlas it is possible to search conflicts by country, by merchandise object of the conflict – the right to the territory is the subject with more conflicts in the world with 495 cases shown in the map, followed by 300 cases of water conflicts – or by Enterprise – Shell, Nigerian Petroleum Corporation and Chevron are those that have more related conflicts.
