ABUSO DE ANTIBIÓTICOS CONDUCE A MUTANTES RESISTENTES

Una cepa mutante de E. coli resistente hasta a los más fuertes antibióticos ha sido encontrada en los EEUU, dijeron las autoridades sanitarias de ese país el jueves.

La bacteria, descubierta el mes pasado (ver http://goo.gl/NOmN9a) en una mujer de 49 años de Pennsylvania con una infección en el tracto urinario contiene un gen conocido como mcr-1 que lo hace resistente aun a la colistina un antibiótico conocido por décadas que ha sido cada vez más usado como tratamiento de último recurso contra peligrosas superbacterias  (ver: https://goo.gl/uspk1S ) .

El descubrimiento es el primero en los EEUU de bacterias humanas resistentes a la colistina, una droga reservada para tratar serias infecciones que resisten a otra clase de antibióticos mayores conocida como carbapenemos. Las bacterias que puedan resistir a la colistina y a los carabpenemos serían imparables (ver: http://goo.gl/Aoj2s2), según The New York Times.  

“Se teme que esto se extienda a otras bacterias creando una bacteria resistente a todo (ver http://goo.gl/FiPoJ0)”, dijo a ABC News el Dr. Beth Bell, director del Centro Nacional de Enfermedades Infecciosas Emergentes y Zoonosis de los Centros para el Control y Prevención de Enfermedades  (Centers for Disease Control - CDC).

“Cuanto más estudiamos la resistencia de las bacterias a las drogas, más nos preocupa”,  dijo el jueves el Dr. Tom Frieden, director del CDC (ver: http://goo.gl/FiPoJ0) . Será el fin del camino para los antibióticos a menos que actuemos urgentemente”.  

Si se trata de la expansión de las bacterias resistentes , “los animales criados para el consumo son de particular cuidado”, dicen los CDC. “Los antibióticos deben ser usados con gran cuidado en los humanos y los animales pues su uso contribuye a la emergencia, persistencia y expansión de las bacterias resistentes (ver: http://www.cdc.gov/narms/animals.html) .

Comentario por el Editor: Exactamente esto es lo que el movimiento orgánico ha venido advirtiendo desde hace rato. La práctica de la ganadería intensiva normalmente usa los antibióticos como medida preventiva – necesaria o no – y como promotores del crecimiento. También se usa y abusa de los antibióticos en medicina humana, sean también ellos necesarios o no. Tal uso generalizado de antibióticos provoca la reacción de la naturaleza que crea mutantes resistentes a los antibióticos, haciendo mucho más difícil tratar las infecciones.

MUTANT SUPERBUG HAS BEEN DISCOVERED IN THE U.S.

A mutant strain of E. coli, resistant to even the toughest antibiotics, has been found in the United States, federal health officials said Thursday.

The bacteria, discovered last month in a 49-year-old Pennsylvania woman with a urinary tract infection, contains a gene known as mcr-1, making it resistant even to colistin, a decades-old antibiotic that has increasingly been used as a treatment of last resort against dangerous superbugs.

The finding is the first U.S. discovery in a human of bacteria resistant to colistin, a drug held in reserve to treat serious infections that resist another major class of antibiotics called carbapenems. Bacteria that could resist colistin and carbapenems would be unstoppable,according to The New York Times.  

“The fear is that this could spread to other bacteria and create the bacterium that would be resistant to everything,” Dr. Beth Bell, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, told ABC News. 

“The more we look at drug resistance, the more concerned we are,” Dr. Tom Frieden, CDC director, said Thursday. “The medicine cabinet is empty for some patients. It is the end of the road for antibiotics unless we act urgently.” 

When it comes to spreading resistant bacteria, “food-producing animals are of particular concern,” the CDC says. “Antibiotics must be used judiciously in humans and animals because both uses contribute to the emergence, persistence, and spread of resistant bacteria.

Comment by the Editor: This is what has been warned since long ago by organics. Industrial livestock practice normally uses antibiotics either as preventative measures – needed or not – and as growth promoters. And they are also used in humans – needed or not – to fight infectious diseases.This abuse of the antibiotics causes a natural reaction by nature creating antibiotic resistant mutants that make it more difficult to fight infections.
