El miércoles la Comisión Europea va a presentar las muy esperadas reglas para ayudar a identificar las propiedades de los disruptores hormonales en pesticidas y otros agroquímicos, y, eventualmente, prohibirlos.
Las Naciones Unidas (UN) y la Organización Mundial de la Salud (WHO) consideran que esta es una “amenaza global” dado que los disruptores hormonales está relacionados a la infertilidad, cáncer, obesidad y diabetes.
El Ejecutivo de la UE debía haber emitido las nuevas reglas en el 2013 y fue advertido por la más alta corte del bloque el año pasado por no haberlo hecho.
La UE tiene leyes para eliminar los disruptores endócrinos en agua, productos químicos industriales, productos de protección vegetal y biocidas, pero es preciso que presente criterios científicos para definir qué es lo que son.
En un informe el miércoles pasado aprobado por 593 votos a 57 con 19 abstenciones, los Ministos del Parlamento Europeo (MEP) condenaron fuertemente a la Comisión por “su permanente negligencia” en publicar las nuevas reglas que, dicen, estaban listas en el 2013, pero que fueron cajoneadas debido al intenso lobbying por parte de la industria química.
Nessa Childers, MEP independiente por Dublin dijo que la “decisión de la Comisión de escuchar a la industria de los pesticidas condujo a años de comtemporización y ofuscación”.
"Estas sustancias son peligrosas para la salud humana a niveles extremadamente bajos y, por lo tanto, son inseguras a cualquier umbral”, agregó la Sra. Childers.

COMMISSION TO TABLE PROPOSALS ON PHASING OUT HORMONE DISRUPTORS
On Wednesday the European Commission will come forward with long-awaited rules to help identify hormone-disrupting properties in pesticides and other chemicals, and eventually phase them out.
The United Nations and World Health Organization consider the issue a "global threat" as hormone disruptors are linked to infertility, cancer, obesity and diabetes.
The EU executive should have come up with the new rules by 2013, and was pulled up by the bloc's highest court last year for failing to do so.
The EU has laws in place to phase out endocrine disruptors in water, industrial chemicals, plant protection products and biocides, but needs to come up with specific scientific criteria to define what they are.
In a report last Wednesday, which passed by 593 votes to 57 with 19 abstentions, MEPs blasted the Commission's "persistent failure" to publish the new rules, which they say were ready in 2013 but were put on ice following intensive lobbying by the chemicals industry.
Nessa Childers, an independent MEP for Dublin, said the Commission's "choice to listen to the pesticides industry has since led to years of temporising and obfuscation".
"These substances are hazardous to human health at extremely low levels, and are thus unsafe at any measurable threshold," Ms Childers said.
