Ratas alimentadas
con maiz GM Bt MON810 durante solo 90
días sufrieron serios daños en la superficie de las membranas mucosas del jejunum (parte del intestino delgado),
según un nuevo estudio.
El tipo de
maiz con que se alimentó a las ratas era el MON810: Ajeeb YG, una version GM de
Ajeeb, variedad de maiz localmente adaptado que se cultiva en Egipto y desarrollado
por Monsanto para el mercado egipcio. Las ratas alimentadas con el maíz GM
ingirieron una dieta conteniendo 30 % de maíz MON810: Ajeeb YG. Las ratas control
fueron alimentadas con igual cantidad de maíz no-GM.
En las ratas
alimentadas con el maiz, algunas áreas del villi — estructuras tipo dedos del
intestino que absorben los nutrientes del alimento – se encontraron dañadas. Las
mismas estaban distorsionadas y aplanadas, con algunas de las células pegadas
entre ellas. Las criptas (glándulas mucosas) se encontraron perturbadas y los
vasos sanguíneos estaban congestionados. Se constataron signos de inflamación –
infiltraciones de células sanguíneas blancas – alrededor del área en que se
verificó daño. Además, las células de la mucosa intestinal tenían estructuras
anormales.
El estudio,
conducido por Marwa Ibrahim, MD y Ebtsam Okasha de la Facultad de Medicina de
la Universidad de Tanta, Egipto, fue publicado en la revista científica Experimental
and Toxicologic Pathology.
Los investigadores
concluyeron que “el consumo de maiz GM altera profundamente la estructura histológica
(microscópica) del jejunal”. Añadieron que “los resultados de este estudio podrían
demostrar que a pesar de los informes
tranquilizadores sobre productos GM, el maiz GM alteró profundamente la
estructura histológica de la mucosa jejunal a varios niveles y revelaron
algunos signos alarmantes, como las lesiones hemorrágicas repetidas además de
varias alteraciones estructurales para el jejunum bajo influencia de maíz GM descriptas
aquí por primera vez”.
Los
investigadores recomiendan más investigación para clarificar los mecanismos a
través de los cuales el maíz MON810: Ajeeb YG originó ese efecto.

Findings
contradict reassuring reports on GM products, say researchers
Rats fed GM Bt corn MON810 for only 90 days suffered serious damage to the
surface mucous membranes of the jejunum (part of the small intestine),
according to a new study.
The type of corn fed to the rats was MON810: Ajeeb YG, a GM version of
Ajeeb, a locally adapted variety of corn grown in Egypt developed by Monsanto
for the Egyptian market. The GM-fed rats ate a diet containing 30 percent
MON810: Ajeeb YG corn. Control rats were fed the same amount of non-GM corn.
In the GM-fed rats, some areas of the villi—finger-like structures in the
intestine that absorb nutrients from food—were damaged. They were distorted and
flattened, with some cells joined together. The crypts (mucosal glands) were
disrupted and blood vessels were congested. Signs of inflammation—white blood
cell infiltration—were seen around areas of damage. In addition, the cells of
the intestinal lining were abnormal in structure.
The study, conducted by Marwa Ibrahim, MD and Ebtsam Okasha of the Faculty
of Medicine at Tanta University, Egypt, was published in the journal Experimental
and Toxicologic Pathology.
The researchers concluded that “consumption of GM-corn profoundly alters
the jejunal histological [microscopic] structure.” They added, “Results from
the current study could show that in spite of the assuring reports on GM
products, GM corn has profoundly altered the histological structure of the
jejunal mucosa at many levels and revealed several alarming signs, as the
proliferative and eroded hemorrhagic lesions in addition to several ultrastructural
alterations described here for the first time for jejunum under GM corn
influence.”
The researchers called for more research to clarify the mechanisms through
which the MON810: Ajeeb YG corn created this effect.
