RENOVABLES EN URUGUAY

“En 2014, la Federación Mundial para la Vida Silvestre (WWF) aclamó al diminuto país sudamericano, como la nación que estaba definiendo las tendencias mundiales en cuanto a la inversión en energías renovables.”

Uruguay se ha concentrado en desarrollar diferentes formas de tecnologías renovables, lo que les permite disponer de más del 95 % de su generación de electricidad a partir de este tipo de fuentes y sin generar dependencia de ninguna.

En 2000 Uruguay dependía del petróleo (que constituía el 27% de sus importaciones totales) para gran parte de sus necesidades energéticas. Era muy común comprarle electricidad a la Argentina para aliviar los frecuentes cortes de energía y se estaba poniendo en marcha un nuevo gasoducto para traer el gas de Brasil. Con ese panorama nadie se explica cómo el Uruguay es hoy uno de los países más verdes del mundo. Y es que, en los últimos años, la inversión en energía (gran parte de ellas, renovables) alcanzó los 7 mil millones de dólares, lo que les ha permitido una rápida expansión de sus campos de turbinas eólicas, así como una mayor inversión en las industrias solar y de biomasa.

A ello debe añadirse a la extensa red hidroeléctrica preexistente, lo que explica de alguna manera por qué ahora Uruguay recibe la gran mayoría de su energía de fuentes renovables. 

Teniendo en cuenta el combustible utilizado para cubrir las necesidades energéticas totales del país, la contribución de las renovables cae al 55 %, pero sigue siendo significativamente superior al promedio mundial del 12 %.

“In 2014, the World Wild Fund  (WWF) acclaimed the tiny South American country as the nation that was defining world tendencies regarding investments in renewable energies”.

Uruguay has concentrated itself in the development of different forms or renewable technologies, allowing it to generate 95% of electricity from these types of sources, without generating dependency of anyone of them.

In 2000 Uruguay depended on oil (it constituted 27% of their total imports) to cover a great part of its energy needs. It was very common to buy electricity from Argentina to alleviate the constant electricity cuts and it was starting a gasoduct to bring gas from Brazil. Considering all this, nobody understands how Uruguay is today one of the greenest countries in the world.

The explanation is that in the last few years the country invested 7 billion dollars in the generation of energy, most of it from renewable sources, which allowed a rapid expansion of their eoic parks, as well as investments in solar and biomass energy generation. This is to be added to the pre-existent hydrolectric network. Thus Uruguay now gets most of its energy from renewable sources.

Taking into account the fuel used to cover all the country’s energy needs, the contribution of renewables fall to 55%, but still significantly higher than the world average of 12%.
