La Universidad del Desierto (College of the Desert) en asociación con la ciudad de Palm Springs está creando un colegio universitario comunal autosustentable que demuestra el potencial de los principios de construcción ‘verde’ y prepara a los estudiantes para carreras ambientales.

La Ciudad de Palm Springs dice que se está apuntando a establecer una economía verde y atraer a empresas de tecnología limpia para que se instalen allí; de allí el énfasis en lo ‘verde’ del nuevo colegio.

La mitad del campus estará reservado para un Parque Verde de 10 megawatts en el que se construirá una planta solar por la Southern California Edison. Se operará comercialmente y tendrá facilidades para investigación y desarrollo, así como enseñanza y aprendizaje. También está planeada la instalación de una incubadora de negocios de Tecnología Verde.

Hasta que se inaugure formalmente instalaciones solares proveerán la mitad de la energía solar necesaria para el campus instaladas en coberturas abiertas por encima de los techos a tres pisos de altura que además proveerán sombra como lo muestra la imagen. Habrán también paneles solares en los techos y estacionamientos.

SELF-SUSTAINING COLLEGE CAMPUS GROWS IN CALIFORNIA DESERT (from an article in Green Business News from SustainableBusiness.com [info@sustainablebusiness.com]; Oct. 2, 2012)

A partnership between College of the Desert and the City of Palm Springs is creating a self-sustaining community college  that showcases the potential of green building principles and prepares students for green careers.

The City of Palm Springs says they are aiming to establish a green economy and attract cleantechn companies to locate there, thus the emphasis on "green" at the new College.

Half the campus is earmarked for a 10 megawatt GreenPark, where a solar plant will be built by Southern California Edison. It will be operated commercially and have facilities for research and development, and teaching and learning. A Cleantech business incubation center is also planned. 

Until then, solar will supply half the power, and is being  installed on trellises three stories high that float over courtyards that also provide shade (as depicted in the image below). Solar panels will also be on rooftops and carports.
