La agricultura urbana está en

ha venido siendo un gran misterio.
Un estudio publicado en la
revista Environmental Research Letters establece que cerca de 1.100 millones de
acres (unos 550 millones de hectáreas) cultivadas para producir alimento se
encuentran a o cerca de 12 millas (20
km) de las ciudades. La mayoría de esa tierra está en la periferia de las
ciudades, pero un 16,6 % de esas granjas urbanas están en espacios abiertos
dentro del ejido de la comuna.
Los investigadores del International
Water Management Institute, Universidad de California-Berkeley y Stanford University — usaron una combinación
de análisis de sensores remotos satelitales y censos agrícolas, y datos de
población y socioeconómicos. Los investigadores dicen que este es la primera
evaluación global de tierras de cultivos urbanas y el agua que ellas consumen.
Pero aún cuando los análisis
encontraron que un 80 % de las granjas urbanas del mundo (al menos las que son suficientemente
grandes como para ser visualizadas por los satélites) se encuentran en el mundo en desarrollo, los

Urban agriculture is clearly taking off around the world — in backyards, on rooftops and on local farms. But just how much of the world's cropland can we really call urban? That's been a big mystery.
A study published in the journal
Environmental Research Letters has stated that somewhere around 1.1
billion acres is being cultivated for food in or within about 12 miles (20
kilometres) of cities. Most of that land is on the periphery of cities, but
16.6 percent of these urban farms are in open spaces within the municipal core.
The researchers — who hail from
the International Water Management Institute, the University of
California-Berkeley and Stanford University — looked at a combination of
remote-sensing analyses of satellite imagery and agricultural census,
population and socioeconomic data. They say theirs is the first global
assessment of urban croplands and the water they consume.
But even though the analysis found that some 80 percent of the world's urban farms (at least the ones big enough to be visible by satellite) are in the developing world, governments in those countries are not always supportive of them.
