SMART CLOTHING: A WEATH OF INFORMATION AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

In an interesting article (1) we read that smart garments may be largely confined to sport for the moment but technology-enabled clothing could well be about to find far bigger audiences outside the fitness industry.

The autor says that “In fact, smart garments will outstrip all other types of wearable fitness-tracking gadgets in terms of growth, going from nowhere to become the single largest category in 2016, according to new projections from analyst firm Gartner.
That growth in sports clothes technology will also spill into new areas, such as healthcare and industry, potentially raising more questions about access to personal data and the privacy of the individual”.
The article says that at the moment, the technology is most commonly found in atheltic garmentss. Shirts have sensors woven into their fabric and a transmitter module that relays the data to a smartphone connected via Bluetooth.
Smart garments will change from being mostly for athletes and people doing sports to include people in their everyday lives and the clothing they wear. Heart-rate monitoring will remain a primary use driving demand but its application outside sport is set to increase. Another use will be to check stress levels that may lead to more serious health problems.
Smart garments can also provide information about the environment. Polouted areas of cities and industrial quarters may give information on how long can a sensitive person stay in the area.
Older people at home can also find smart garments useful. The type and extent of an old fellow’s activity could be monitored or recorded for medical reasons.
People in dangerous jobes such as miners, policemen, and remote workers can also be surveyed through intelligent garments so that hazardous situations can be checked and appropriate assistance be given..
After about 2018 smart garments could start to find more medical uses, but the regulatory approval process for such applications is likely to be lengthy. Also privacy concerns could delay the generalñ application of these technologies.
McIntyre said the spread of this technology wll raise privacy issues over rights to access data generated by millions of items of clothing.
