En el suplemento “Campo” del Diario La Nación de Buenos Aires del domingo 17 de Noviembre de 2013, apareció un artículo titulado “Cómo hacer para cortarles el paso a las malezas resitentes”. El mismo cita al Ing. Agrónomo Federico Elorza, coordinador técnico de la Cámara Argentina de Sanidad Agropecuaria y Fertilizantes (CASAFE) diciendo que “si bien la soja transgénica y el paquete tecnológico de la siembra directa, introducidos en la Argentina a mediados de los 90 generaron un salto sin precedentes en la producción agrícola, las malezas fueron adquiriendo resistencia por la utilización de un solo herbicida o grupo de herbicidas” y por defectos de aplicación de los mismos.

El artículo enumera una cantidad de malezas que se han hecho resistentes en Argentina (y ern el mundo!) y que pueden provocar pérdidas de hasta el 80% en los cultivos. El profesional puntualiza una serie de herramientas de manejo para luchar contra las malezas, por ejemplo la rotación … de cultivos? NO! De herbicidas y sus principios activos! Y sugiere “rotar los tradicionales – como glifosato y 2,4D - con mejores formulaciones de glifosato, hormonales y residuales”.  Y agrega entre los herbicidas pre-emergentes “el sulfentazone, el flumi oxazin, triazinas o acetanilidas”. Y para posemergentes  ”el glufosinato de amonio y los herbicidas hormonales”.  ¡Toda una “farmacopea agroquímica”  que ciertamente no es producida por medio de la “química verde”!

Lamentablemente el especialista omitió mencionar la razón fundamental para el desarrollo de resistencia en las malezas: la capacidad de la Naturaleza de producir mutaciones para defenderse de las agresiones. Así, cuantos más agroquímicos se apliquen, más se estarán incentivando los mecanismos de defensa de esas malezas que queremos combatir.  Y al mismo tiempo más vamos a incentivar a las grandes corporaciones a crear nuevos agroquímicos que aumentarán los costos al agricultor mientras incrementan las utilidades de esas inmensas corporaciones. Corporaciones  que “fertilizan” el crecimiento de su capital y de su capacidad para seguir creando las causas del aumento de la resistencia de las malezas a costa del esfuerzo de los agricultores.

Pero lo que también pierden de vista los creadores de este círculo vicioso, es que ellos también forman parte del sistema de equilibrio del entorno del que nadie está exento y que tarde o temprano reaccionará hasta crear las barreras de defensa de las agresiones que nuestra soberbia se ingenia permanentemente en crear, sean ellas físicas, económicas o morales.

In the special section “Campo” of the newspaper La Nación, Buenos Aires, Argentina, of Sunday November 17, 2013, appeared an article titled: “How to stop resistant weeds”  in which Agr.Eng. Federico Elorza, technical coordinator of the Argentine Chamber of Agricultural Sanity and Fertilizers (CASAFE), says that “if it is true that transgenic soy and the Direct Sowing technological package that appreared in the 90’s generated an unprecedented  jump in agricultural production”, it is also true that “the weeds became resistant due to the use of just one herbicide or group of herbicides”, and also due to mistakes in their application.

The article mentions a number of weeds that became resistant in Argentina (and many of them also in the World) that can lead to losses of up to 80% in crop yields. The professional points out several  tools to fight super weeds , including “rotation” … of what? Of crops? NO!!! of herbicides and their active principles!  He suggests “rotating the traditional ones – such as glyphosate and 2,4-D – with better formulations of glyphosate, hormones and residual herbicides. He mentions, among the pre-emrgence herbicides , “sulphomenthazone, flumi oxazin, triazines or acetanilydes”. And among the post-emergent herbices, “ammonium gluphosinate and hormonal herbicides”. A whole “agrochemical pharmacopea” – certainly not produced by means of “green chemistry”!

Unfortunately, the specialist omitted mentioning the fundamental cause for the development of superweeds: that is, Nautre’s capacity to produce mutations to defend itself against aggresions. Therefore, the more agrochemicals are applied, the more incentivation of the defense mechanisms of the weeds we want to fight.  And at the same time, the more incentives for great corporations to create new agrochemicals that will increase the cost of farming . As well as the growth of those huge corporations’ profits, and thus, their capacity  to continue creating the causes of weed resistance at the cost of the farmers’ efforts.

But what the creators of this vicious circle forget is that also they are part of the virtual equilibrium of which nobody is exempt, and that sooner or later it will react creating barriers for its defense against the aggresions  that our arrogance permanently creates, be they physiscal, economic or moral.
