de 200 millones de personas en el mundo están en riesgo por exposición a
desechos tóxicos, concluye un informe. El estudio del Blacksmith Institute y de
Green Cross llevado a cabo en más de 3.000 sitios en más de 49 países reclama
llevar a cabo mayores esfuerzos para controlar el problema.
El estudio identificó al vaciadero Agbobloshie en Accra, la capital de Ghana como la mayor amenaza tóxica para la vida humana, según explicó al Servicio Tamil de la BBC de Londres el Dr Jack Caravanos, director de investigaciones del Instituto Blacksmith y profesor de salud pública en la Universidad de la Ciudad de Nueva York,. Añadió que Ghana deseaba activamente progresar en el campo de la Tecnología Informática y comenzó a importar computadoras usadas de Europa hace 10 años. Ello resultó en un basurero elctrónico para Europa. Como el segundo mayor sitio de procesado de desechos electrónicos de África Occidental, Ghana importa 215.000 toneladas anuales de computadoras de segunda mano particularmente de Europa Occidental, y genera otras 129.000 toneladas de desechos electrónicos al año. Y el estudio advierte que las importaciones de electrónica de segunda mano se duplicará hacia el año 2020.

y millones de dólares invertidos en el saneado del Riachuelo en las afueras de
Buenos Aires, ese curso de agua continúa siendo uno de los sitios más
polucionados del mundo, según el informe citado en el texto del artículo. Y lo
seguirá siendo hasta que el país se decida finalmente a encarar en serio el
problema impidiendo que las industrias instaladas aguas arriba de ese curso de
agua continúen volcando impunemente en él sus efluentes industriales y que las
municipalidades del conurbano tomen con un poco más de empeño el servicio de
saneamiento de asentamientos precarios. Increíblemente, ese rio es el límite
sur de la orgullosa ciudad capital de la Argentina.

More than 200 million
people around the world are at risk of exposure to toxic waste, a report has
concluded. The study from the Blacksmith Institute and Green Cross carried out
in more than 3,000 sites in over 49 countries calls for greater efforts to be
made to control the problem.
The study identified the Agbobloshie dumping yard in Ghana's capital Accra as the place which poses the highest toxic threat to human life. Agbobloshie has become a global e-waste dumping yard, causing serious environmental and health issues Dr Jack Caravanos, director of research at the Blacksmith Institute and professor of public health at the City University of New York told the BBC's Tamil Service.
He said Ghana actively wanted to progress in the IT field and as such started importing used computers from Europe 10 years ago. That had resulted in Agbobloshie becoming a dumping yard for e-waste from Europe. As the second largest e-waste processing area in West Africa, Ghana annually imports around 215,000 tonnes of second hand consumer electronics from abroad, particularly from Western Europe, and generates another 129,000 tons of e-waste every year. The study warns that Ghana's e-waste imports will double by 2020.

COMMENT BYTHE BLOG’S EDITOR: After decades and
millions of dollars spent, the Riachuelo River
in the outskirts of Buenos Aires City, Argentina, continues being, as
the report states, one of the most polluted
places of the World. And it will
continue so until the country decides to stop industries from dumping their effluents
in that course of wáter, and the municipalities of the outskirts take seriously
the sanitary services of precarious settlements. Riachuelo river is, unbelievably,
the southern boundary of the country’s proud Capital city.
