EEUU Y EL CAMBIO CLIMÁTICO GLOBAL  (ENGLISH VERSION BELOW)

Parece que por fin hay alguna reacción en el Congreso de los EEUU respecto de una política de control del cambio climático global y ello trae un destello de luz en un panorama de otra forma muy oscuro.

Más de dos docenas de senadores Demócratas del Congreso Norteamericano montaron una rara maratón en el Senado anoche y hasta las horas matutinas mientras la nación dormía, a menudo apuntando a un cartel que decía "Time to Wake Up" (Es Hora de Despertarse).

El tema fue la necesidad del Congreso de hacer algo más para combatir el cambio climático. A medida que pasaba la noche sus discursos tocaron temas que incluyeron los devastadores impactos de la Supertormenta Sandy, el caso de un hombre que inició una huerta comunitaria en New Jersey, el costo de la energía para los hoteles de Hawaii y el daño producido a las ostras por las aguas ácidas del océano. Los senadores intercambiaron repetidamente preguntas sobre el cambio climático y cómo se ven afectados sus respectivos Estados.

No se vio que los Senadores leyeran guías telefónicas, una táctica a la que echan mano a veces para conservar el quorum cuando los opositores impiden acciones en el Senado. Los objetivos de anoche fueron precisamente hacer lo contrario: empujar a la acción.

Los Senadores encuadraron la lucha contra el calentamiento global como imprescindible para evitar el aumento del nivel de los mares, conducir al país hacia las energías renovables, y ayudar a los EEUU a evitar consecuencias como las sequías y las tormentas extremas.

Hubieron pocas referencias a la grandeza de Norte América y a la innovación que los EEUU puedan inspirar para encontrar alternativas a los combustibles sólidos. Algunos Senadores compararon la lucha contra el cambio climático con la puesta del hombre en la luna en términos de enfrentar desafíos imposibles pero críticos.

Si bien la iniciativa fue de los Senadores Demócrtas que son los más críticos de la posición global de los EEUU en materia de emisiones de gases invernadero por los combustibles fósiles, ella apunta a la bancada contraria que es la que se opone férreamente a las medidas contra el cambio climático. Quizás esta acción tenga una reacción mediática y de relativa presión en el resto del Congreso de los EEUU que lo encamine paulatinamente hacia actitudes nacionales más postivas respecto de la necesidad de un cambio de visión del calentamiento global. USA AND GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE

It seems that at last there is some reaction in the US Congress towards climate change. It brings a hint of light in an otherwise drab panorama.

More than two dozen Democratic senators staged a rare Senate talkathon last night and through the early morning hours, often posing next to a sign that said, "Time to Wake Up," as the nation's capital slumbered.

Their issue was the need for Congress to do more to combat climate change. As the night wore on, their speeches touched on topics including the devastating impacts of Superstorm Sandy, a New Jersey man who started a community garden, the cost of energy for Hawaiian hotels and the oysters that have been hurt by acidic waters. Senators repeatedly engaged each other in colloquies to ask each other questions about climate change and how their respective states were being affected.

There was no reading of telephone books, a tactic senators have sometimes resorted to in the past to hold the floor during filibusters to prevent Senate action. Last night's goal was the opposite: to push for action.

Senators framed fighting global warming as essential to halting rising sea levels, moving the country to renewable energy and helping the United States avoid consequences of climate change like droughts and extreme storms.

There were also many paeans to America's greatness and the innovation that senators said the United States could summon to find ways to get off fossil fuels. Several senators compared fighting climate change to putting a man on the moon in terms of tackling a seemingly impossible but critical challenge.

Even if the initiative was by the Democrat Senators that oppose the position of the US regarding climate change, it targets the Senators of the other side that are the ones that strongly oppose measures to fight climate change. Perhaps this original initiative will influence the rest of the US Congress, slowly leading it towards a more positive approach towards the need of new visions regarding climate change.   Jorge Casale, Editor, www.allorganics21.blogspot.com
