ÁRTICO: PETRÓLEO Y VIDA SILVESTRE

El Gobierno de los EEUU propone abrir las áreas del Mar de Beaufort a la perforación
de petróleo y gas, amenazando a la mitad del habitat del oso polar en
Norteamérica y al impoluto Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Ártica, hogar de
millones de pájaros y animales silvestres.
Un derrame de petróleo en el Mar de Beaufort devastaría las
costas del refugio, cubriéndolo con una gruesa capa de baro tóxico por décadas.
No se debe permitir que se arriesgue al mayor santuario de vida silvestre del
Ártico Norteamericano solo para extraer más combustible fósil contaminante
Ya se ha visto lo que ocurrió con el desastre de la British Petroleum
en el Golfo de Mexico y cómo devastó delfines, tortugas y aves. Imaginemos un
desastre similar en el remoto y frígido Ártico y su impacto en los osos polares,
morsas y caribú! Y, aún en la mejor de las circunstancias, las empresas
petroleras mostraron lo inadecuado de sus técnicas de limpieza en casos de
desastres de gran magnitud. Las ásperas condiciones del Ártico harían que un
derrame de petróleo allí sea imposible de limpiar.
Al mismo tiempo,
el Ártico se está calentando dos veces más rápido que el resto del globo, ya
que las temperaturas medias se elevaron en dos y medio grados en los últimos 60
años 1 . Las tormentas se han vuelto más violentas, la costa se está
erosionando y la masa de hielo está disminuyendo a velocidades terroríficas.
El US’s Sierra Club
pide a los habitantes de todo el mundo que soliciten a la Administración de los
EEUU que prohíba la explotación petrolera del Ártico hoy y para siempre, y
proteja el mayor santuario de vida silvestre de Norteamérica, clickeando aquí: to put the
Arctic Ocean off-limits to drilling now and forever and protect America's
greatest Arctic wildlife sanctuary!

PROTECT THE ARCTIC REFUGE FROM AN OIL SPILL DISASTER!

The Obama
Administration has proposed opening oil and gas drilling in the Beaufort Sea --
threatening half of America's polar bear habitat and the pristine Arctic
National Wildlife Refuge -- home to millions of wild birds and animals.
An oil spill in the Beaufort Sea could devastate the coastline
of the refuge blanketing it with a thick layer of toxic sludge for decades. We
cannot afford risking America's greatest sanctuary for Arctic wildlife just to
extract more dirty fossil fuels.
You've seen how the BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico has
devastated dolphin, turtle, and bird populations. Imagine an oil disaster in
the frigid, remote Arctic and its impact on wildlife like polar bears, walrus,
seals and caribou! And
even in the best circumstances oil companies have shown their oil spill cleanup
technology is inadequate to deal with a major disaster. Harsh Arctic conditions
would make an oil spill nearly impossible to clean up!
The Arctic is
also warming twice as fast as the rest of the globe, as average
temperatures have risen two-and-a-half degrees over the past 60 years.1 Storms are becoming more violent, the
coastline is eroding and pack ice is shrinking with terrifying speed.
US’s Sierra Club calls people from all over the World to make
a call to US Administration to put the
Arctic Ocean off-limits to drilling now and forever and protect America's
greatest Arctic wildlife sanctuary!
