MIAMI: PORT OF ENTRANCE OF FRESH FRUITS

The US organic fruit market is huge and very important for organic exporters from South America due to the counterseasonality. Although the news release commented below does not refer necessarily to the trading of organic fruits it would be completely applicable to them.

The article mentions the fresh fruit import program through the Port of Miami, whose first success was the case of fresh grapes from Peru.
Bill Johnson, director of the Port of Miami, comments to portalfruticola.com that the shipments “begin the cold treatemnt one or two days before departure and stop in Panama for a week where the cold treatment is completed. When they are sure that the cold treatment has been completed, they inform the USDA and forward the fruit to Miami”.
“This is becasue Florida allows the reception of grapes with cold treatment in Peru, which is completed before entering Florida. It is the same protocol used in California”, Johnson added.
The protocol allows also blackberries and citrics from Uruguay, and Port Everglades also appears to be an alternative port of entrance. And Customized Brokers, of Crowley, that was also involved in the creation of the program, recently presented a list of countries and specific products that can be considered for the program. Argentina is included in the list with fresh grapes, blackberries, strawberries, apples, pears, plums, mandarines, oranges, peaches, apricots, cherries, kiwis and nectarines, pointing out that they would be open to other suggestions.
