SPAIN: LEADER IN EOLIC ENERGY USE
SPAIN: LEADER IN EOLIC ENERGY CONSUMPTION
Spain may not be world’s largest producer of
eolic energy but in 2013 it was the one country in which this kind of energy had the largest
participation in the country’s composit energy consumption. It was thus in the
road of a largest substitution of fossil fuel energy production with renewable
energy sources and reduction of carbon emissions to the environment.

For the
first time in history the wind has been the first souce of electricity in Spain
in 2013. In fact, Spain is the first country of the world in which eolic energy
occupies most of the demand during a whole year. According to the system’s
operator Red Eléctrica de España (REE), 20.9 % of
the demand of electricity was covered by eolic energy while nuclear energy
covered just 20.8 %.
During
January, February, March and November, eolic was the main contributor to the
total system’s the electric production. In months when wind blew the most,
Spanish people saved money. The influence of eolic energy on the prices of the
pooled market is very clear in the days
of more or of less wind. In 2013, the day of maximum participation of eolic
energy in supplying the demand of power was February 2 in which the market
price was at its minimum of 7,69 euros/MWh. The minimum supply of eolic energy
was on Dec. 8, 2013, when price of the pooled energy was 93,11 euros/MWh.
Eolic energy was first regulated in Spain in
2013. In those 16 years fossil fuel imports were reduced 20% as well as CO2
emissions to the atmosphere. The Spanish Government should take this into
account before deciding on the energy reform.
