EVITAR EL CO2 NO ALCANZA: HAY QUE RETIRARLO
RETIRANDO EMISIONES DE CARBONO (ENGLISH VERSION BELOW: SCAVENGING CO2 EMISSIONS)
La velocidad de disminución de la producción de
emisiones no alcanzará para evitar llegar a los niveles críticos necesarios
para ralentizar el cambio climático: el CO2 ya producido debe retirarse de la
atmósfera y, de ser posible, dirigirlo a propósitos útiles.
Una reciente noticia aparecida en el servicio
noticioso ambierntal Sustainable Business (1) puntualiza que “al
ritmo en que el mundo está atacando al cambio climático – que ciertamente no es
suficiente (nowhere near fast enough) – estamos convencidos que esta tecnología
de rescate del carbono emitido es absolutamente esencial y contamos que ella
alcanzará niveles de escala en el corto plazo”. El artículo reporta que la
empresa Suiza Climeworks dice que empezará retirar carbono este
verano, comenzando por 1.000 toneladas métricas por año, informa Bloomberg (reports Bloomberg). “Esa es una cantidad minúscula pero será la primera vez en que
el carbono será retirado del ambiente y vendido”.
El proceso es teoréticamente simple:
el aire es pasado a través de filtros especializados de intercambio iónico
donde el carbono reacciona químicamente y es mantenido en el material del
filtro y cuando este se satura se lo calienta y así el carbono vuelve al estado
gaseoso … el que, dicen, puede ser vendido. El proceso es técnicamente
factible, pero un balance en el costo de la energía empleada es clave para
alcanzar la factibilidad económica.
El método propuesto, al igual
que varios otros que se están desarrollando con el mismo propósito, se
encuentra en su etapa introductoria y todavía depende del aporte económico
externo. Pero se hace mención de que esta tecnología se encuentra hoy en el
mismo estado en que se encontraban las energías renovables hace un par de décadas.
“Un impuesto al carbono haría la diferencia y lo volvería rápidamente competitivo”,
dice el artículo.
De todas formas, este camino es
mucho más razonable que capturar el carbono para enterrarlo (capturing carbon and burying it underground).

Reducing emissions
generation will not suffice to avoid their critical levels needed to slow down
climate change: CO2 must be taken off the atmosphere and, if possible, turn it
to useful purposes.
A recent news by Sustainable Business (1) points out that
“at the rate the world is attacking climate change - nowhere near fast
enough -
we're convinced this technology is absolutely essential and we are counting on
it to scale quickly”. The article reports that Switzerland-based Climeworks claims it will start removing carbon
this summer, starting with 1000 metric tons a year, reports Bloomberg. “That's a tiny amount but this is the
first time carbon will be removed and then sold”.
The
process is theoretically simple: air is pulled through specialized ion exchange
filters where carbon is chemically bound to the filter material and when that's
saturated, it is heated, turning it back into a gas ... which it said that it
can be sold. The process is technically feasibile, but a balance in energy
cost will be the key of its economic feasibility.
The
proposed method, as well as others for the same purpose, are in their
introductory stage and still depend of outside economic support. But it is said
that we are in the same stage as other renewable energy developments a coupler
of decades ago. “A carbon tax would make all the
difference to quickly make it competitive” says the article.
