El impacto de varios megaproyectos de infraestructura en la selva amazónica y los resultados de la Cumbre de la Tierra Río+20 serán las noticias ambientales relacionadas con los bosques más importantes en América Latina este 2012, dijeron periodistas ambientales, líderes de opinión, al blog de Bosques de CIFOR.
“Una historia importante podría ser la proliferación de proyectos de infraestructura en la cuenca del Amazonas y su impacto sobre los bosques y la gente que los habita”, dijo Barbara Fraser, periodista independiente cuyo trabajo ha sido publicado por EcoAméricas, The Daily Climate, The Lancet, y Environmental Science & Technology, entre otros.
“La mayoría de estos proyectos – que incluyen carreteras, presas, canales, ferrocarriles y oleoductos – no son nuevos, pero algunos como las presas en Brasil y la polémica carretera que cruzará el Parque Nacional Isiboro Sécure en Bolivia están próximos a ser ejecutados”, explicó.
El debate en torno a las grandes inversiones y proyectos de infraestructura planeados para la Amazonia durante el año 2012 sin duda tendrán un papel importante en la cobertura sobre bosques en la región durante este año, dijo Yana Marull, responsable de la oficina de la agencia de noticias AFP en Brasilia.
Sin embargo, para Miguel Ángel Torres y Talli Nauman, codirectores de Periodismo para Elevar la Conciencia Ecológica (PECE), la resistencia de las comunidades será el ángulo que domine en la prensa debido a “los proyectos globales de las transnacionales que seguirán empecinadas en apoderarse de los recursos naturales”.
“En [2011] vimos protestas, principalmente de indígenas y de comunidades tradicionales, en Bolivia, Brasil y Perú. Existe evidentemente un dilema entre el desarrollo de una región en la que viven millones de personas, incluidas las comunidades aborígenes, y la protección ambiental”, agregó Marull.
“Creo que Rio+20 será el tema principal para la prensa de América Latina”, dijo Antonio Carlos Teixeira, editor de TerraGaia – Comunicación, Ambiente, Sustentabilidad, con sede en Río de Janeiro. “No sólo porque se llevará a cabo en el continente, sino también por las expectativas de una participación más efectiva de Brasil en relación a las causas sociales y ambientales de sus vecinos latinoamericanos. La responsabilidad de Brasil es grande… todas las decisiones del país influirán en las naciones del continente, especialmente en temas tales como las cadenas de producción sostenible (economía verde), la lucha contra la pobreza, el endurecimiento de leyes contra taladores ilegales, la aplicación de las inversiones de REDD y la sostenibilidad de sus ciudades”.Petróleo y gas también serán un foco de atención para los medios de comunicación, dijo Rhett Butler, fundador y editor de Mongabay, uno de los sitios de noticias de conservación y medio ambiente más populares del mundoUn rubro de inversiones que podrían llegar a esta región podría ser el sector energético, lo que significará una mayor competencia en el mercado de capitales, mayores exigencias de fiscalización ciudadana sobre emisiones y también más conflictos ambientales, explicó. Oil and gas will also be a focus of attention for the communication media, said Rhett Butler, founder and editor of Mongabay, one of the World’s most popular conservation and environment media. An area of investments that this region could receive is the energy sector, which means more competition in the capital markets, more demand for citizenry fiscalization on emissions, and more environmental conflicts, explaines Butler.
