Incrementaron en un 8%
La superficie mundial de cultivos biotecnológicos creció un 8% a nivel mundial durante 2011. El año pasado se cultivaron 12 millones de nuevas hectáreas, llegando a un total de 160 millones.
De acuerdo a un estudio publicado por International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech (ISAAA), fue en Europa donde se registró el mayor crecimiento. En el viejo continente se plantaron 23.186 ha., llegando a un total de 114.624.
Estados Unidos, Brasil y Argentina son los países que cuentan con la mayor superficie de cultivos transgénicos a nivel mundial con un total de 69 millones de ha.; 30.3 millones; y 23.7 millones, respectivamente En el caso de Brasil éste fue el país que por tercer año consecutivo registró el mayor incremento.
La lista continúa con India (10.6 millones); Canadá (10.4 millones); China (3.9 millones); Paraguay (2.8 millones); Pakistán (2.6 millones); Sudáfrica (2.3 millones); y Uruguay (1.3 millones).
Un total de 16.7 millones de agricultores de 29 países sembraron Organismos Modificados Genéticamente (OMG) en 2011. Del total, 19 naciones corresponden a países en vías de desarrollo, en lo cuales la tasa de crecimiento de cultivos biotecnológicos fue dos veces más rápida que en los países industrializados.
En Europa, España es el país que cuenta con la mayor superficie de cultivos OMG, seguido de Portugal, República Checa y Polonia.

The world’s surface area in biotech crops grew 8% during 2011. Last year there were 12 milion new hectares, reaching 160 million.

A grand total of 16.7 million farmers of 29 countries sow GMOs. Among the nations with transgenic crops, 19 correspond to developing countries in which the growth rate was twice as much as in industrialized countries.
In Europe, Spain is the country with more surface area of transgenic crops, followed by Portugal, the Czech Republic and Poland.
