El Gobernador de California, Jerry Brown, firmó el martes un decreto prohibiendo las bolsas plásticas de un solo uso, convirtiendo así a California en el primer estado que prohibe su uso. Los ambientalistas aplaudieron la legislación como una victoria mayor, y los fabricantes de plástico ya están buscndo hacer que se derogue.

"Este proyecto es un paso en el buen sentido: reduce un torrente de plástico que poluciona nuestras playas, parques y aún el océano mismo”, dijo Brown en una declaración en su página web. Antes de la sanción de la ley para todo el estado, 120 gobiernos locales en California habían prohibido la bolsas plásticas no retornables.

La ley prohíbe a las tiendas de abarrotes y farmacias que ofrezcan bolsas plásticas de un solo uso a partir de Julio del 2015 e incluirá a los negocios de conveniencia para el 2016, informa Associated Press.

Neel Kashkari, opositor al Gobernador Brown en las próximas elecciones en California reiteró su crítica anterior a la legislación del martes. En un tweet indicó que Brown haría mejor enfocándose en la creación de empleo y reducción de la pobreza en lugar de hacerlo sobre las bolsas plásticas. La  American Progressive Bag Alliance, que representa a la industria plástica, anunció que pedirá u referéndum popular para derogar la ley. “Si se permitiera a esta ley entrar en vigor, pondría en peligro a miles de empleos manufactureros en California…”

CALIFORNIA ENACTS NATION'S FIRST STATEWIDE PLASTIC BAG BAN (By Katie Sola

California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill banning single-use plastic bags Tuesday, making California the first state to bar their use. Environmentalists have hailed the law as a major victory, and plastics manufacturers are already seeking to overturn it.

"This bill is a step in the right direction — it reduces the torrent of plastic polluting our beaches, parks and even the vast ocean itself,” Brown said in a statement on his website. Prior to Tuesday's enactment of the statewide ban, 120 local governments in California had already banned single-use plastic bags.

The law bars grocery stores and pharmacies from offering single-use plastic bags as of July of 2015, and will include convenience stores by 2016, the Associated Press reports.

Neel Kashkari, Gov. Brown's opponent for the governorship of California, reiterated his earlier criticism of the legislation on Tuesday. In a tweet, he indicated that Brown would be better off focusing on job creation and poverty reduction rather than plastic bags. The American Progressive Bag Alliance, which represents the plastics industry, announced it will seek a voter referendum to overturn the law. "If this law were allowed to go into effect it would jeopardize thousands of California manufacturing jobs…”
