El USDA está debatiendo en este mismo momento en Portland, OR, EEUU sobre las siguientes preguntas sobre el uso generalizado de antibióticos en la producción de peras y manzanas. Las preguntas y las respuestas desde el punto de vista orgánico son las siguientes:

1)     Constituye el uso de este material una amenaza a la salud humana?

Algunos profesionales médicos ven un serio riesgo en la distribución masiva de los antibióticos de bacterias resistentes a los antibióticos en el ambiente. Un 80% del uso de antibióticos se encuentra en la agricultura (mayormente en producción animal).

2)     Constituye el uso de este material una amenaza para el ambiente?

Preocupa que la aplicación de antibióticos de amplio espectro en los huertos de peras y manzanas usando la tecnología de dispersión por fuertes corrientes de aire (air blast technology) impactarán en la vida microbiana y la biodiversidad del huerto. La ley Federal que regula la producción de orgánicos exige que sean considerados los impactos negativos sobre la biodiversidad

3)     Es este material imprescindible en la producción orgánica?

Obviamente, la mayoría de los productores probaron que, usando prácticas culturales más conservadoras (no apiñando los árboles, usando cultivares y materiales de reproducción resistentes, etc.) y remedios naturales, el uso de los antibióticos no es esencial en la producción de manzanas.

USDA is deliberating these questions right now in Portland, OR. The questions and answers from the organic point of view, are:

1)    Is the Use of This Material a Threat to Human Health?

Some medical officials see the real risk in the wholesale disbursement into the environment of antibiotic resistant bacteria. 80% of antibiotic usage is in agriculture (mostly in livestock production).

2)    Is the Use of This Material a Threat to the Environment?

There is concern that applying broad-spectrum antibiotics in pear and apple orchards, using air blast sprayer technology, will have an impact on microbial life and the biodiversity of the farm. Federal law governing organics mandates that negative impacts to biodiversity be considered.

3)    Is This Material Essential in Organic Production?

Obviously, the majority of farmers have proven, by using more conservative cultural practices (not crowding trees, using resistant cultivars and rootstock, etc.) and naturally-based remedies, that the use of antibiotics is not essential in apple production.
