En el número de Setiembre 17, 2013 de la versión en Francés del newsletter Organic-Market.Info Online Magazine [newsletter@organic-market.info], apareció un artículo por Gabriel Lombard titulado Ecologie et Médias en el cual se menciona el despido de un acreditado periodista Francés por el conocido diario Le Monde por “Militancia” ecológica, es decir,  por defender con convicción flagrantes actos en contra de la ecología que podrían considerarse contrarias al bienestar y seguridad pública presente y futura.

Es cierto que juzgar esos actos favorables a la ecología como contrarios a la posición “políticamente correcta” del diario depende de la posición más radical o menos radical que cada uno adopte frente al hecho dado. La ecología es aplaudida por todos pero tiene un precio que no todo el mundo está dispuesto a pagar. Entra en juego el bienestar futuro esperado, pero choca con la medida de lo que otro está dispuesto a sacrificar del presente actual en aras de un futuro incierto. Estamos en un mundo en el que el eje que va del mal inaceptable al bien inesperable tiene infinitos grados intermedios, y cada uno tenemos nuestra propia posición supuestamente inalienable. Y para colmo, la decisión de ubicarnos en un punto intermedio de ese eje depende no solo de cada individuo, sino de cada situación particular en la que se encuentra ese individuo. Podemos despotricar contra el daño geológico provocado por las perforaciones de ‘fracking’ pero que no me falte la gasolina para movilizarme cuando voy de prisa. O el gas para la calefacción en un invierno de -12ºC. O la iluminación en el quirófano cuando me están operando. O la energía en mi computadora cuando estoy escribiendo estas líneas.

odos nos hemos ido acostumbrando a cosas que derivan del progreso y del avance tecnológico, todas cosas muy costosas en términos ecológicos. Las personas tienen un umbral de necesidades y expectativas diferentes unas de otras. En ciertas ocasiones aplaudiremos un hecho de “militancia” a favor de la ecología cuando leemos el diario, mientras que en otras ocasiones consideraremos  ese término como epíteto, si entiendo que el hecho cercena alguno de mis derechos individuales.  Y los medios – así como hoy las redes sociales - son el lugar ideal para discrepar acerca del punto en que en ese momento y bajo esas circunstancias exactas ese individuo decide ubicarse en el curso del devenir humano. El problema es conciliar las infinitas posiciones que la humanidad elija ocupar en ese momento. Y si no se pueden conciliar, por lo menos convendría que tratemos de ser comprensivos y considerados aceptando la existencia de la diversidad humana.

In the September 17, 2013 issue of the French version of Organic-Market.Info Online Magazine [newsletter@organic-market.info], an article by Gabriel Lombard titled Ecologie et Médias was published, critizising the firing of an accredited French newspaperman by the known newspaper Le Monde because of his “ecological  activism”, that is, his defense with strong conviction flagrant acts against the ecology that could be considered against the public welbeing and security, both present and future.

It is true that to consider such activism favorable to the ecology as contrary to the “politically correct” positions of the newspaper depends on the more or less radical position that one can adopt facing a given action. Ecology is applauded by everybody, but it has a price that not everybody is willing to pay. It involves the expected future welbeing, but it clashes with what others are willing to sacrifice of the actual present for the benefit of an uncertain future. We are in a World in which the axis that goes from the unaceptable evil to the improbable good has infinite intermediate degrees, and each of us has his own supposedly inalienable position.  To make things worse, the decission to place ourselves in an intermédiate point in such axis depends not only of each individual, but on the particular situation in which that individual finds himself at that precise moment. I may critizise the geologic damage of ‘fracking’ but I would not accept not finding gasoline at the pump when I need to mobilize in a hurry. Or gas for heating in a -40ºF Winter. Or lightning in the surgery room when I must be operated. Or power in my computer while I’m writing this article.

We all have become accustomed to things derived from progress and technological advance, all very costly in terms of ecology. People have different thresholds of needs and expectations that differ from those of others.  In cerain occasions we will applaud an act of “ecological activism”  while reading the newspaper, while others may consider the term an epiteth, feeling that some of his individual rights are being curtailed. And the media – as well as the social networks – are the ideal place to disagree about the precise point in which in that particular time and under the exact circumstances such individual decides to place himself in the specific moment of the human becoming. The problem is to concíliate the infinite positions that humanity chooses to be in that moment. And if conciliation is not possible, at least let’s be understanding and considerate accepting the existence of human diversity.
