LA INDUSTRIA PUEDE MEJORAR LAS EMISIONES?

Esta semana CDP (antes conocida como Carbon Disclosure Project . Proyecto de Publicación del Carbono) publicó su 2013 Global 500 Climate Change Report (Informe 2013 sobre el Cambio Climático de las empresas Global 500) una mirada a qué es lo que están haciendo cientos de corporaciones alrededor del mundo para combatir el cambio climático – y cuán bien lo están haciendo.
Más del 80% de de la empresas Global 500 de la lista de CDP – una lista de las mayores compañías globales según su capitalización de mercado – respondieron a la encuesta acerca de qué están haciendo respecto de las emisiones de carbono, estrategia climática, gobernabilidad y participación de partes interesadas en toda actividad desde viajes de negocios a transporte diario de los empleados de la organización

Apenas un pequeño número de las compañías son responsables de la mayoría de las emisiones de carbono del mundo. Según CDP las 50 más grandes de las mayores compañías del mundo generan el 73% de todas las emisiones de carbono – compañías como Walmart y Exxon. Estos 50 grandes emisores no están siquiera mejorando. Sus emisiones de gases invernadero treparon en promedio un 1,7% anual durante los últimos cuatro años.

Observación del Editor del Blog: el artículo presenta interesante información acerca de magnitud de emisión y porcentajes por ramo industrial, lista de las compañías que hicieron más y mejor, y otros datos revelados sobre el tema por la encuesta. Dice la autora del artículo que esto demostraría que todavía pueden esperarse mejoras de la industria, contrariamente a los gobiernos que hasta ahora no han demostrado estar logrando mucho en materia de control del cambio climático.

This week, CDP (formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project) released its 2013 Global 500 Climate Change Report, a look at what hundreds of big corporations around the world are doing to combat climate change--and how well they're doing it.
More than 80% of CDP's Global 500--a list of the largest global companies by market capitalization--responded to the organization's climate survey, which asked for details about carbon emissions, climate strategy, governance, and stakeholder engagement in everything from business travel to employee commuting.

Just a small number of companies are responsible for the majority of the world's carbon emissions. According to CDP, the top 50 biggest listed companies in the world generate 73% of all greenhouse gases--companies like Walmart and Exxon. These 50 big emitters aren't getting any better. Their greenhouse gas emissions climbed an average of 1.7% annually over the past four years.

Comment from the Blog’s Editor: the article presents interesting information about emissions’ magnitude and percentages per industry, list of companies that did most and better, and other clarifying data shown by the survey. According to the author of the article these figures could demonstrate that there is room for improvement through industry contrary to governments that have not shown much success in the control of the climate change.
