TESTBIOTECH: LA COLZA OGM SE ESTÁ DIFUNDIENDO DE FORMA INCONTROLADA A ESCALA MUNDIAL (de un artículo en Bioagricultura Notizie [newsletter@aiab.it]; Sep. 27, 2013)

La organización  Testbiotech  publicó recientemente una panorámica global de casos de difusión incontrolada de la colza genéticamente modificada. Más afectados son Canadá, EEUU, Japón y Australia, pero también Europa.
En muchos casos los genes de colza OGM se difundieron en el ambiente también a grandes distancias de los terrenos de los cuales provinieron. Además, el patrimonio genético modificado, subraya la misma organización, habría dado vida a nuevas combinaciones – naturalmente no autorizadas a ser deliberadamente emitidas al ambiente – de las cuales el riesgo no ha sido debidamente evaluado.
El informe recuerda también que no será posible prever cuales serán las consecuencias de una difusión incontrolada en el tiempo y espacio de plantas GM hasta que no sean efectuadas las previsiones sobre períodos evolutivos suficientemente confiables.
Por otra parte, no es de excluir que las mutaciones de las condiciones ambientales, por ejemplo del cambio climático, podrían desencadenar interacciones inesperadas entre las plantas y la biodiversidad.

GENETICALLY ENGINEERED OILSEED RAPE OUT OF CONTROL (from an article in Bioagricultura Notizie [newsletter@aiab.it]; Sep. 27, 2013)

Today Testbiotech has published a global overview of countries where there has been an uncontrolled spread of genetically engineered oilseed rape (canola). The countries include Canada, the US, Japan, Australia and Europe. In many cases the plants have escaped far beyond the fields into the environment. In some cases, the transgenes have moved into populations of wild relatives. Furthermore, new combinations of DNA constructs have been found which were never approved for release into the environment.

The consequences of allowing genetically engineered plants to spread with no spatio-temporal control can not be predicted. Reliable risk assessment on an evolutionary scale is not feasible. For example climate change can cause unexpected interactions between the plants and the environment. Once adverse effects become noticeable it might be too late for taking action. The plants can no longer be removed from the environment.

These difficulties are also evident in the EU. Although there was never any large scale growing of genetically engineered oilseed rape nevertheless contaminations in the harvest are reported repeatedly.

The report of Testbiotech calls for political activities to strengthen the precautionary principle. The release of genetically engineered organisms should not be allowed if they cannot be retrieved from the environment anymore.
