La Environmental Protection Agency (Agencfia de
Protección Ambiental de Irlanda) dio la luz verde para la realización de
ensayos de papas transgénicas en County Carlow, Irlanda.
Teagasc, el organismo estatal que cultivará las papas informa que esos tubérculos han sido modificados genéticamente para mejorar su resistencia al moho tardío que causa €15m al año en cosechas perdidas.
Los ensayos serán llevados a cabo durante cuatro años en la central de Teagasc en Oak Park, Co Carlow.
Las pruebas estarán sujetas a controles estrictos y monitoreo permanente, y se emitirán informes a la EPA, quienes, a su vez, diseminarán la información al público.
Intentos anteriores de cultivar GM en el país condujeron a fuertes protestas por parte de los ambientalistas.

The (Irish) Environmental Protection Agency has given the go
ahead to GM potato trials in County Carlow, Ireland.
Teagasc, the state body growing the potatoes, says the potatoes have been engineered to improve their resistance to late blight, which costs €15m a year in lost crops.
Trials will be carried out for four years at Teagasc headquarters in Oak Park, Co Carlow.
The trials will be subjected to strict controls and regular monitoring, with reports being made to the EPA. The EPA will then disseminate the information to the public.
Previous attempts to grow GM crops in the country have lead to strong protests from environmentalists.
