The European Food Safety Authority EFSA has given a positive opinion on the cultivation of GE soy in the EU for
the first time, Testbiotech reports. The EU Commission and Member States now
have to decide on final market authorisation. The applicant Monsanto intends to sell its seeds for herbicide
tolerant Roundup Ready soy to European farmers.
The GE soy can currently be imported but not grown in the EU. But as a new legal dossier prepared on behalf of Testbiotech shows, the authorisation as planned would violate existing EU law because residues remaining in the plants from spraying with the herbicide were not taken into account during risk assessment. Furthermore, EFSA does not foresee monitoring possible health effects from these residues although required to do so by EU law, according to Testbiotech.

Europea de Seguridad Alimentaria (European Food Safety Authority – EFSA) dió por primer vez su opinón positiva (positive opinion) sobre el cultivo de soja transgénica en la UE, informa Testbiotech.
La Comisión de la UE y los Estados Miembros tienen ahora que decidir acerca de
la autorización final para ese mercado. El solicitante, Monsanto, intenta vender
sus semillas de soja Roundup Ready resistentes al herbicida a los productores
Europeos.
Al presente, la soja GM se puede importar a la UE, pero no cultivar. Pero, como un nuevo dossier legal preparado a pedido de Testbiotech demuestra, la autorización, como está planeada, violaría las actuales leyes de la UE porque los efectos sobre la salud los residuos que permanecen en las plantas después de la fumigación con el herbicida no fueron tenidos en cuenta durante la evaluación de riesgo.
