Una
empresa Británica propone liberar mosquitos genéticamente modificados en los
Cayos, pero los residentes temen que todavía no se sepa lo suficiente sobre los
insectos.
Una petición puesta
por una mujer en Cayo Hueso juntó casi 90.000 firmas y siguen subiendo.
Mila de Mier, la
peticionante, comenzó la campaña porque dice temer que falte información
científica para comprender qué le pueden hacer los insectos al delicado
ecosistema de los Cayos de Florida. Acusó a Oxitec, la firma biotecnológica
Británica que desarrolló los mosquitos, de no atender a los deseos de los
locales.
Pero Oxitec dice que
solo los mosquitos machos serían liberados, los que no pican y no transmiten la
fiebre.
La mutación funciona
muy eficientemente esterilizando los mosquitos y evitando que tengan crías y
así no hay peligro de que la mutación sea transferida.
La fiebre del Dengue
está siendo un creciente problema en todo el mundo, y los mosquitos la
extenderán más durante el calentamiento del clima. Afecta a 100 millones de
gente al año en el mundo con una enfermedad parecida a la gripe que puede ser severa
y hasta fatal. Se la encuentra en todas partes al norte de Buenos Aires y el
sur de Miami, así como en otros 27 estados sureños de los EEUU.

UK company wants to unleash genetically
modified insects in the Keys, but residents fear not enough is known about the
insects
A British company that has developed a
genetically modified mosquito to resist the spread of dengue fever is coming up
against growing opposition to a plan to release the insects into the Florida Keys.
A Change.org
petition started by a woman in Key West opposing the
release has garnered almost 90,000 signatures and rising. "Say no to
genetically modified mosquitoes release," the petition demands.
Mila de Mier, the author of the petition,
began the campaign because she said she was worried about the lack of
scientific understanding of what the insects could do to the delicate ecosystem
of the Florida Keys. She accused Oxitec, the UK-based biotech firm that has
developed the mosquito, of failing to listen to local wishes.
Only male mosquitoes would be released that
do not bite and do not carry dengue fever.
The mutation works by effectively sterelising
the mosquitoes and preventing them from having offspring. That also means,
Oxitec insists, that there is no danger of the mutation that has been
introduced to the males from being passed down the generations.
Dengue fever has become a growing problem
around the world, as the carrier mosquito spreads in warming climates. It
strikes about 100 million people a year globally with a flu-like illness that
can be severe and even fatal.
It is now found everywhere north of Buenos
Aires and south of Miami, as well as in 27 other southerly states in the US.
