USA-EU ORGANIC AGREEMENT, A FACT !

The USD A has announced that, as Jun e 1st has passed produce originating in either the USA or the EU and labelled as organic may be sold as such in either country. 
The partnership began in February when Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan signed an agreement with Dacian Ciolos, European Commissioner for Agriculure and Rural Development, and Ambassador Isi Siddiqui, US Trade Representative Chief Agricultural Negotiator signed the relevant paperwork.  

The US had already signed similar partnership agreements with Canada in 2009 and has already begun discussions for more with South Korea, Taiwan and Japan. 
The partnerships eliminate lots of certification processes and paperowrk, thus lowering the costs of business operations. 
The arrangement covers products exported from and certified in the United States or the European Union only.
"Estimates show the market for US organics sales to the EU could grow substantially within the first few years of this arrangement," according to the USDA announcement. "Today, more than two-thirds of US consumers buy organic products at least occasionally, and 28 percent buy organic products weekly."

EL ACUERDO COMERCIAL ORGÁNICO EEUU-UE  ENTRA EN FUNCIONAMIENTO (de un artículo en Global Produce News, FreshPlaza.com [mail@freshplaza.com], Junio 5, 2012)

 

El USDA anunció que desde el 1º de Junio han comenzado a pasar productos originarios de los EEUU o de la UE rotulados como orgánicos para ser vendidos en cualquiera de esos países. 
La relación comenzó en Febrero cuando la Subsecretaria de Agricultura de los EEUU, Kathleen Merrigan, firmó un acuerdo con Dacian Ciolos, Comisionado Europeo para la Agricultura y el Desarrollo Rural. El Embajador Isi Siddiqui, Representante Comercial de los EEUU y Negociador Agrícola Principal firmaron los documentos pertinentes.  

Los EEUU habían ya firmado acuerdos semejantes con Canadá en el año 2009, y ya comenzaron las tratativas con Corea del Sur, Taiwan y Japón. Estos acuerdos eliminan numerosos procesos de certificación y papeleo burocrático, bajando así los costos de las operaciones comerciales.

Debe tenerse presente que el presente acuerdo cubre solo productos certificados y exportados desde los EEUU o de la Unión Europea.
Según el anuncio de la UE, "las estimaciones muestran que el mercado para los productos orgánicos Norteamericanos a la UE podrían crecer sustancialmente dentro de los primeros cinco años del acuerdo. Hoy más de las dos terceras partes de los consumidores de los EEUU compran productos orgánicos al menos ocasionalmente, y el 28% los compran semanalmente”.
