Officers of the EU said that small quantities of GMs will be allowed in foods imported into the region under new rules that will be soon proposed by the block’s executive branch. European importers and producers point out that the measures are necessary in order to avoid interruption of food imports, because the global supply chains make it more and more difficult to guarantee that freights to Europe be completely free of still non approved GMOs. “The European Commission said that they want to solve this problem by year end, and that a proposal will be presented very soon”, said the speaker form the EU Health and Consumers Commission, Frederic Vincent.

LA UNIÓN EUROPEA PERMITIRÁ TRANSGÉNICOS EN ALIMENTOS (Ámbito Financiero, Campo, Jun.12, 2012)

Funcionarios de la Unión Europea (UE) dijeron que se permitirá la presencia de pequeñas cantidades de Organismos Genéticamente Modificados (OGM) en los alimentos importados por la región, bajo nuevas normas que serán propuestas pronto por el brazo ejecutivo del bloque. Los exportadores y productores europeos señalan que las normas son necesarias para evitar interrupciones en las importaciones alimentarias, dado que las cadenas de suministro globales hacen cada vez más difícil garantizar que las cargas con destino a Europa estén totalmente libres de OGM aún no aprobados por el bloque. «La comisión europea ha dicho que quiere resolver este problema antes de fin de año, y presentaremos una propuesta en el futuro muy cercano», indicó el portavoz de la Comisión de Salud y Consumidores, Frederic Vincent.
