The American Medical Association
(AMA) House of Delegates has called for mandatory pre-market safety testing of
genetically engineered (GE) foods – but said there is currently no reason to
label them.

N. of the E.: The article insists that there
is no scientifica evidence or concern about health consequences of GM foods,
but they urge the FDA to remain alert on new data in health consequences of genetically
engineered foods. In other words, the AMA seems to be saying: “I do not believe
in witches, but they may exist”.

BRIEF: NEW GM LABELLING RULE
IN INDIA BAFFLES (from an article in Food Legislation

India has finally notified new
rules for the labelling of genetically modified (GM) foods, but the move
appears to have heralded a new round of turf wars and further protests.
N. of the E.: Transgenics is a scratchy
subject in India, the last controversy was on cultivation of GM Eggplant
(brinjal). Now, the Ministry of Consumers Affairs established legislation on GM
labeling, curiously based on its metrology regulation office. Two other government offices had been tentatively dealing
with transgenics, and question several things of the new regulation, mainly the
fact that GM labeling has nothing to do with metrology.

BRIEF: OTA WELCOMES PROPOSAL
FOR STRICTER ORGANIC PROGRAM CONTROLS (from an article in Food

The Organic Trade Association
(OTA) has welcomed the introduction of legislation that would tighten controls
on organic certification, saying that it would protect the integrity of the
USDA’s National Organic Program seal.

El Directorio de Delegados de la American Medical Association (Asociación Médica Americana - AMA) pide un ensayo de seguridad mandatorio pre-mercadeo para alimentos genéticamente (GE) – pero añade que actualmente no hay razón para rotularlos.

notificó acerca de las nuevas reglas de rotulado de alimentos transgénicos
(GM), pero el tema parece haber iniciado un nuevo round de guerras entre
organismos y nuevas protestas.

N. del E.: hace tiempo que el tema transgénicos
es urticante en India, una de las últimas controversias es acerca de la berenjena (brinjal) GM. Ahora
aparece una legislación específica del Ministerio de Asuntos del Consumidor
exigiendo el rotulado de esos alimentos. Lo curioso es que corresponde al programa
de metrología de ese ministerio, siendo que existen otros dos organismos
nacionales que intentan llevar adelante el tema transgénico.

La
Asociación del Comercio Orgánico (Organic Trade Association - OTA) dio la
bienvenida a la legislación que aplicaría controles más estrictos a la
certificación orgánica, aduciendo que así se protegería mejor la integridad del
sello del Programa Orgánico Nacional del USDA (National Organic Program seal).
