Rio de Janeiro’s Major, Eduardo Paes, and the Minister of the Environment, Izabella Teixeira, closed with a chain the Access to the dump situated at the edge of Guanabara Bay.
Gramacho, Latin America’s largest dump, located North of Rio de Janeiro, was closed after 34 years of environmentally questioned operation, just days before the World Summit for sustainable development begins in this city.
The closure had been agreed in 2004, but the decission was postponed several times, and was finally set for the beginning of this month, when Rio will host more than a hundred World leaders in the United Nations Rio+20 summit that will discuss a development model closer to measures of environmental care. Some 1,600 people that lived of manual recycling of garbage, known as “catadores” (rummagers) will be compensated by the municipality.
In the place where Gramacho functioned for 34 years, a new biogas plant will be set, thus contributing to the reduction of liberating methane gas in the athmosphere.

El alcalde de Rio, Eduardo Paes, y la ministra de Medio Ambiente, Izabella Teixeira, clausuraron con una cadena la entrada al vertedero, situado al borde de la Bahía de Guanabara
Gramacho, el mayor basurero de América Latina, ubicado al norte de Rio de Janeiro, fue cerrado este domingo después de 34 años de cuestionado funcionamiento ambiental, a días de que se instale en esta ciudad la cumbre mundial sobre desarrollo sustentable.
Su cierre fue acordado en 2004, pero la decisión se aplazó varias veces y finalmente fue fijada para inicios de este mes, cuando Rio acogerá a más de un centenar de líderes mundiales en la cumbre de las Naciones Unidas Rio+20, que discutirá un modelo de desarrollo acorde con el cuidado ambiental.
Unas 1.600 personas que vivían del reciclaje manual de desperdicios, conocidas como 'catadores', recibirán una indemnización de la alcaldía.
En el sitio donde funcionó por 34 años Gramacho operará una planta de biogás, que también contribuirá a reducir el metano de la atmósfera..
